GDS — Global Distribution System

The GDS is the marketplace infrastructure of commercial aviation. It aggregates seat inventory, fares and schedules from airlines worldwide and makes them accessible to travel agents, corporate booking tools and online travel agencies (OTAs) through a single connection.

The Three Major Providers

The global GDS market is dominated by three platforms: Amadeus (headquartered in Madrid, strongest in Europe and Asia-Pacific), Sabre (US-based, dominant in the Americas) and Travelport (which operates the Galileo and Worldspan platforms).

How a GDS Booking Works

When a travel agent books a flight through a GDS: (1) The agent queries the GDS for availability and fares. (2) The GDS retrieves live inventory from the airline's PSS. (3) The agent selects and books; the GDS creates a PNR in both the GDS and the airline's system. (4) The booking is confirmed via electronic ticketing.

Airline Economics

Airlines pay GDS booking fees (typically per-segment) for each booking made through the platform. These fees have historically been a significant distribution cost. NDC (New Distribution Capability) emerged partly as an airline response to reduce GDS dependency and fees.

GDS vs Direct Channel

GDS bookings are indirect; the airline does not control the customer relationship. Direct channels (airline website, app, NDC API) allow airlines to offer personalised content, ancillaries and dynamic pricing unavailable through traditional GDS connections.
