TIMATIC is the reference system that airline check-in agents and DCS systems consult to determine whether a passenger holds the correct documentation to be admitted at the destination country. It protects airlines from the substantial fines imposed when they carry improperly documented passengers.

What TIMATIC Covers

TIMATIC provides: passport and travel document validity requirements by nationality and destination, visa requirements (including visa-on-arrival and electronic travel authorisation — ETA, ESTA), transit visa requirements for stopover countries, health requirements (vaccination certificates, medical documentation), COVID-19 and special entry requirements (updated continuously), and other conditions such as minimum passport validity rules.

How TIMATIC Is Used

At check-in, the DCS or agent console queries the TIMATIC database with the passenger's nationality, destination, transit points and travel document details. TIMATIC returns a status — typically a traffic light indicator — showing whether the documentation appears sufficient. The final decision rests with the destination country's immigration authority.

IATA offers TIMATIC AutoCheck, an API-based integration that allows airlines to automate document checking within the DCS workflow, reducing agent reliance on manual lookups and improving consistency.
