Definition
RVSM is the airspace standard that reduced the minimum vertical spacing between aircraft above Flight Level 290 from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet, roughly doubling the number of usable cruise altitudes in the busiest part of the flight envelope.
What RVSM Changed
Reduced Vertical Separation Minima is an airspace standard that cut the minimum vertical spacing required between aircraft flying above Flight Level 290 (roughly 29,000 feet) from the older 2,000-foot standard down to just 1,000 feet — the same spacing already used at lower altitudes. Before RVSM, the airspace band from FL290 to FL410 (where most long-haul jets cruise most efficiently) had only half as many usable flight levels as the airspace below it, because aircraft needed twice the vertical buffer to stay safely separated.
Why It Was Introduced
A 1988 ICAO study concluded that 1,000-foot vertical separation was technically feasible at high altitude given the altimetry and autopilot precision of modern aircraft, opening the door to doubling the number of usable flight levels in the busiest, most fuel-efficient part of the cruise envelope. The benefit compounds across three dimensions at once: airlines get access to more optimal cruise altitudes for their specific weight and route (rather than being squeezed into whichever of the few available levels happens to be free), which directly saves fuel; and air navigation service providers get roughly double the airspace capacity in the same volume of sky, reducing congestion-driven delays and rerouting.
Aircraft and Operator Requirements
Flying in RVSM airspace isn't automatic — both the aircraft and the operator need specific approval. The aircraft must be equipped with altimetry systems precise enough to reliably maintain assigned altitude within the tighter tolerance RVSM demands (typically dual independent altimetry systems plus an altitude-alerting system), and that equipment must be certified to meet RVSM height-keeping performance standards. The operator, separately, must hold specific RVSM operational approval from its regulator, covering maintenance procedures for the relevant systems and crew procedures for operating in RVSM airspace. An aircraft without current RVSM approval is either barred from the relevant flight levels entirely or has to be specifically coordinated around by air traffic control, which is why RVSM approval is treated as a standard, non-negotiable prerequisite for long-haul operations today.
Where RVSM Applies
RVSM is now standard across the vast majority of the world's high-altitude airspace, including the North Atlantic Track system, most domestic airspace in the US and Europe, and most oceanic and remote-continental airspace — to the point that non-RVSM-approved aircraft are now the exception needing special handling, a reversal of the situation when RVSM was first introduced region by region in the 1990s and 2000s.
