Definition
Wake Turbulence Category is the ICAO classification (Light, Medium, Heavy, Super) that groups aircraft by Maximum Takeoff Weight to determine the minimum following separation air traffic control must apply, since heavier aircraft generate stronger, longer-lasting wake vortices.
Why Wake Turbulence Categories Exist
Every aircraft in flight generates wake vortices — swirling columns of turbulent air spinning off its wingtips — and the strength, persistence and reach of those vortices scales with the aircraft's weight: a heavier aircraft displaces more air to generate the lift it needs, and that translates directly into a stronger, longer-lasting wake. For a smaller aircraft flying into that wake shortly after — especially at low altitude on approach or departure, where there's little room to recover — a strong wake vortex can produce a violent, uncommanded rolling motion genuinely capable of causing loss of control. Wake turbulence categories exist to give air traffic controllers a standardised way to apply extra spacing precisely where that risk is highest.
The ICAO Categories
ICAO classifies every aircraft type into one of four wake turbulence categories based on Maximum Takeoff Weight: Light (L) covers aircraft at or below 7,000 kg; Medium (M) covers aircraft above 7,000 kg but below 136,000 kg — the category most narrow-body airliners fall into; Heavy (H) covers aircraft at or above 136,000 kg, encompassing most wide-body jets; and Super (J) is a category currently reserved, per ICAO Doc 8643, for a single aircraft type: the Airbus A380, at roughly 575 tonnes MTOW, whose wake is powerful enough to warrant its own dedicated separation standard beyond even the Heavy category.
How Separation Scales
Required following separation increases specifically when a lighter aircraft is behind a heavier one — the asymmetry matters, since a Heavy aircraft following a Super generates far less relative risk than a Light aircraft doing the same. As a concrete example, a Light aircraft landing behind a Super-category A380 requires around four minutes of separation, while a Heavy aircraft following the same A380 needs only about two. Pilots operating an aircraft in a category that requires special handling are expected to communicate their category to ATC and to other aircraft specifically so everyone involved applies the correct additional buffer.
RECAT and the Move Toward Finer-Grained Separation
The traditional four-category system is a broad-strokes approach — it groups a wide range of actual aircraft weights and wake characteristics into just four buckets. Several major air navigation authorities have since introduced RECAT (Re-categorisation) schemes that split aircraft into more granular categories based on actual measured wake behaviour rather than weight alone, allowing tighter, more specific separation minima in some pairings — increasing runway throughput at busy airports without giving up any of the safety margin the ICAO categories were designed to guarantee.
