Definition
Biometric passenger processing uses physiological identifiers — primarily facial recognition — to verify a traveller's identity at airport touchpoints: check-in, bag drop, lounge access, boarding gate and border control, replacing or supplementing the manual document and boarding pass check.
Biometric Passenger Processing
Biometrics are reshaping the airport passenger journey. By creating a digital identity token at enrollment (typically at check-in or the airport entry point), the same biometric can be used to verify the passenger at each subsequent touchpoint without presenting a boarding pass or document.
Biometric Modalities in Aviation
Aviation primarily uses facial recognition (face biometric). Iris recognition has been deployed at select airports and border posts. Fingerprint biometrics are primarily used in border control and customs rather than airport passenger flow.
The Token Concept
In biometric programmes such as IATA's One ID initiative, a biometric token is created at enrollment and stored securely. At each subsequent touchpoint, the camera captures the passenger's face, matches it against the stored token, and confirms identity — enabling a seamless, document-free journey.
Regulatory Framework
Biometric data is biologically unique and irreplaceable, placing it in the highest category of sensitive personal data under GDPR and equivalent regulations. Airport biometric programmes must comply with data protection law, including obtaining informed consent and limiting data retention periods.
IATA One ID
IATA's One ID programme defines the standards and interoperability framework for biometric identity across the airport journey. It enables identity verification to be shared between the airline, airport operator and border authority without the passenger re-enrolling at each step.
Current Deployment
Biometric boarding is operational at numerous major airports including Singapore Changi, Dubai DXB, Delta terminals in the US, and at Turkish airports. SITA's Smart Path and Amadeus's Airport Biometrics are leading commercial platforms.
