An eGate (Automated Border Control Gate) is the self-service border crossing technology that uses biometric verification — typically facial recognition or fingerprint — to automate the passport and identity check at border control, enabling eligible travellers to cross without interacting with a border officer.

EGates are the physical manifestation of automated border control. They replace the traditional officer-staffed booth with a two-step automated process: document scan and biometric verification, reducing queue times and officer workload at busy international entry points.
How an eGate Works
The typical eGate process: (1) Passenger places their e-passport on the document reader (chip is read). (2) The gate reads the biometric data stored on the passport chip (facial image). (3) A live facial recognition camera captures the passenger's face. (4) The system compares the live image against the chip data. (5) If matched, the gate opens. (6) If unmatched or the chip fails, the passenger is redirected to a staffed booth.
Eligibility
Egate access is typically restricted to: holders of e-passports (with biometric chip), citizens of specific countries (by bilateral arrangement), passengers above a minimum age (typically 17+), and passengers not subject to additional checks.
eGate and APIS
EGate passage does not replace APIS transmission. Airlines must still transmit APIS data before departure. The eGate is the final border control step at the destination; APIS is the pre-departure screening mechanism.
Deployment
eGates are deployed at major international airports globally. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES), when fully implemented, will expand biometric data collection at eGates to include all non-EU nationals entering the Schengen area.
