RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is the wireless technology used in aviation baggage handling to track bags through the airport journey. RFID baggage tags replace or complement traditional barcodes, enabling more reliable automated reading rates (99%+ vs 80–85% for barcodes) and real-time tracking throughout the BHS.
RFID in Aviation Baggage Handling
While RFID is a broad technology used across many industries, aviation baggage handling is one of its most critical applications. RFID baggage tags significantly improve automated read rates, enabling airports and airlines to comply with IATA Resolution 753 baggage tracking requirements.
How RFID Baggage Tags Work
An RFID baggage tag contains a microchip and antenna embedded in the label. As the bag moves through the BHS, RFID reader arrays positioned throughout the conveyor system read the tag without requiring line-of-sight — unlike barcode scanners. The reader records the bag's location and time, updating the baggage tracking record.

Industry Adoption
Delta Air Lines and Las Vegas McCarran (LAS) were among the early large-scale RFID adopters. In Europe, Lufthansa and Frankfurt Airport have deployed extensive RFID systems. IATA's baggage improvement programme drives ongoing industry adoption.
