History

Tiger Airways Australia (later Tigerair Australia) launched domestic low-cost services on 23 November 2007 as an Australian subsidiary of Singapore-based Tiger Airways Holdings, based at Melbourne Airport. Virgin Australia Holdings acquired a 60% stake in October 2012 and took full ownership by October 2014, after which the carrier expanded to secondary bases at Sydney and Brisbane and briefly flew international services to Bali before dropping that route in February 2017.

Current Operations

Tigerair Australia does not operate today. It suspended all flying in March 2020 as COVID-19 travel restrictions collapsed demand, and after parent Virgin Australia entered voluntary administration and was subsequently sold to Bain Capital, the new owners confirmed on 10 September 2020 that the Tigerair brand would be permanently retired rather than restarted.
