History

Air Calédonie International was founded in September 1983 as the international-services counterpart to New Caledonia's domestic carrier Air Calédonie, initially operating with leased aircraft before taking delivery of its own Sud Aviation Caravelle in 1985. The airline rebranded as Aircalin in 1996 and moved into widebody flying from 2000 with a leased Airbus A310, gradually building out a modern Airbus fleet to serve as New Caledonia's international flag carrier.

Current Operations

Aircalin operates an all-Airbus fleet of A320neo narrowbodies and A330-900 widebodies (with A350-900s on order, announced December 2024) from its hub at La Tontouta International Airport near Nouméa, serving destinations across the Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and connections to mainland France, plus domestic service to Wallis and Futuna. It is majority-owned (about 99%) by the Government of New Caledonia and participates in Air France-KLM's Flying Blue frequent-flyer programme, though it is not itself a member of a global alliance.
