History
Japan Asia Airways (JAA) was established on 8 August 1975 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Airlines, created specifically to maintain air links to Taiwan after Japan's 1972 normalization treaty with the People's Republic of China required JAL to suspend direct flights there. JAA began service to Taipei on 15 September 1975 and went on to also serve Kaohsiung, operating as a dedicated, separately branded carrier on Japan–Taiwan routes for over three decades while its aircraft and crews were effectively drawn from the JAL group.
Current Operations
Japan Asia Airways no longer exists as a separate operating carrier. Following a 2007 Japan–Taiwan air transport agreement that normalized direct flights and removed the political need for a standalone subsidiary, JAA flew its final flights on 31 March 2008, and from 1 April 2008 all of its former routes were absorbed directly into mainline Japan Airlines service.
