History
Georgian Airways was founded in 1993 by three pilots as Airzena, initially operating charter flights to the United Arab Emirates, Italy, China, Egypt, India and Syria alongside scheduled service to Vienna. It became Georgia's flag carrier in 1999 and modernized its fleet with leased Boeing 737-500s from Germany's Hapag-Lloyd around 2000. The company rebranded from Airzena to Georgian Airways in August 2004 and joined IATA in 2010, completing the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) the same year.
Current Operations
Georgian Airways operates a mixed fleet reported to include Boeing 767 and Airbus A220 aircraft alongside a Bombardier Global 6000 business jet added in April 2024, flying from its Tbilisi International Airport base. The privately owned carrier has been in financial distress in recent years: it filed for bankruptcy/insolvency proceedings on 31 December 2021 and has reportedly been up for sale since January 2022, with creditors later approving a rehabilitation plan. Despite this, the airline has continued flying and, as of late 2024, was reported to have expanded routes to destinations in the European Union, Israel and Russia. Its exact ownership resolution and long-term financial stability remain unsettled as of 2026, though it continues to hold IATA membership and IOSA certification.
