Airline Identity
History
Silver Airways was formed in late 2011 when private equity firm Victory Park Capital acquired the assets, including a fleet of Beechcraft 1900D turboprops, of the bankrupt regional carrier Gulfstream International Airlines; the new airline launched on 15 December 2011 flying as a Continental Connection and, after Continental's 2012 merger with United, as a United Express regional partner. It later moved to larger Saab 340 and ATR 42/72 turboprop equipment, built a base network centered on Florida, and in 2018 acquired Puerto Rico-based Seaborne Airlines, extending its reach into Caribbean routes, while holding codeshare and interline agreements with JetBlue, Delta and American Airlines. Versa Capital Management acquired majority control of the airline in September 2016.
Current Operations
Silver Airways is no longer flying: it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 30 December 2024, operated its final flight (Flight 56, Tampa to Fort Lauderdale) on 11 June 2025, and converted the case to Chapter 7 liquidation on 29 July 2025 after a bankruptcy auction drew no viable bids to keep the airline flying; its assets were ultimately sold to Wexford Capital, which chose not to resume operations. The airline's former hubs at Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and San Juan are no longer served under the Silver Airways brand.
