WorldTracer — SITA WorldTracer
Systems · baggage-management · IATA Resolution 753
Definition
WorldTracer is SITA's global baggage tracing and mishandled-baggage management system, used by more than 500 airlines across roughly 2,800 airports worldwide to match, track, and repatriate lost, delayed, or damaged bags across the industry's interline network.
Overview
WorldTracer is a baggage management system jointly developed by SITA and IATA. It went into service in December 1991 with 11 airline customers and has since become the de facto global standard for tracing mishandled baggage: SITA reports it is now used by more than 500 airlines and reaches roughly 2,800 airports. The system migrated from mainframe to open-system technology in 2007.
What It Does
Industry Context
Baggage mishandling rates have fallen substantially over WorldTracer's operating history. SITA cites a current rate of roughly 6.9 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers, down from about 19 per 1,000 in 2007, with average repatriation now taking about 1.6 days. IATA Resolution 753, effective June 2018, separately requires member airlines to track baggage at four points in the journey — acceptance, loading, transfer, and arrival; WorldTracer's tracing and case-management layer complements that real-time tracking data specifically for exception handling once a bag is confirmed mishandled.
How It Differs from Related Systems
WorldTracer is a tracing and case-management software layer, not physical infrastructure. A Baggage Handling System (BHS) is an airport's physical conveyor and sortation infrastructure that moves bags; WorldTracer is the interline software that takes over once a bag is reported missing, delayed, or damaged, matching it against found-bag records anywhere in the world. It operates alongside, not instead of, an airline's Departure Control System, which handles routine (non-mishandled) baggage reconciliation at check-in and boarding.
Ownership
WorldTracer is owned and operated by SITA, a Switzerland-headquartered air transport IT provider that is itself owned by airlines, airports, and other aviation industry organizations.
