Definition
A ULD (Unit Load Device) is a standardised container or pallet used to consolidate cargo, mail and baggage into a single unit for efficient loading into the lower hold of wide-body aircraft. ULDs allow ground equipment to handle large quantities of freight as a single, forklift-compatible unit.
What a ULD Actually Is
A Unit Load Device is a standardised container or pallet built to fit the curved lower-deck cargo hold of a wide-body aircraft, letting ground handlers consolidate baggage, cargo and mail into single large units instead of loading hundreds of individual bags and boxes by hand. A forklift or dedicated loader can move a fully packed ULD as one object, and once inside the hold it locks into rails or a cargo-net system built into the aircraft floor — turning what would otherwise be a slow, labour-intensive bulk-loading process into something closer to loading a small number of large, standardised blocks.
The IATA Coding System
Every ULD carries an identification code defined by IATA that tells handlers, at a glance, what kind of unit they're dealing with without needing to inspect it. The first letter identifies the ULD's category — for example, "A" for a certified aircraft container, "P" for a certified aircraft pallet, "R" for a thermally (temperature) certified container, and "L" for a certified multi-contour container. The second character identifies the unit's standard base dimensions, and the third identifies its contour — the specific profile and shape needed to fit a particular hold cross-section. Reading that short code correctly tells ground staff immediately whether a given ULD is compatible with the aircraft it's about to be loaded onto.
Common ULD Types
The most widely used container type is the LD3, sized to fit the lower-deck cargo hold of most wide-body aircraft (777, 787, 747 and similar types); a narrower, reduced-height variant exists specifically for narrow-body aircraft like the A320 family, where hold clearance is tighter. Larger units like the LD6 or LD11 are full-width containers that each occupy the space of two LD3s side by side, letting handlers move roughly twice the volume per unit where hold geometry allows. Flat pallets, secured under a cargo net rather than enclosed in a rigid container, are also classed as ULDs in their own right — the net's rim locks directly onto lugs built into the aircraft floor, which is what actually restrains the load structurally.
How ULDs Are Secured and Handled
Once positioned inside the hold, a ULD is locked in place by the aircraft's own built-in restraint system — rollers, latches and locks integrated into the cargo floor — rather than by any separate strapping the ground crew brings along. This is precisely what makes ULDs fast to load and unload: the restraint mechanism is part of the aircraft, and correctly seating a ULD into it is a matter of positioning rather than manual tie-down work.
Why ULDs Matter for Turnaround Time
Because bulk cargo and checked baggage can be pre-built into ULDs well before an aircraft even arrives at the gate, and because a loader can move an entire ULD in one motion rather than handling its contents piece by piece, ULDs are a significant factor in how quickly a wide-body aircraft's hold can be emptied and reloaded during a turnaround — directly affecting how tightly an airline can schedule that aircraft's next departure.
