Definition
An aircraft turnaround is the ground process between an aircraft's arrival at stand and its subsequent departure: the coordinated sequence of deplaning, cleaning, catering, fuelling, technical inspection, baggage offload/load and boarding that must be completed within a target time to maintain schedule.
Aircraft Turnaround
The turnaround is one of the most complex coordination challenges in aviation ground operations. Dozens of concurrent activities — each performed by different teams — must be sequenced, timed and completed within a window that can be as short as 25 minutes for a short-haul low-cost carrier.
Turnaround Activities
A complete turnaround involves: passenger deplaning and cabin cleaning, potable water service and lavatory servicing, catering uplift, fuelling (weight and balance must be confirmed first), technical inspection and defect rectification, cargo and baggage offload and upload, load sheet preparation and finalisation, passenger boarding, door closure and pushback.
Standard Turnaround Times
Typical minimum turnaround times vary by aircraft type and operator model: narrow-body short-haul (A320, B737): 25–45 minutes; wide-body long-haul (A330, B777): 60–90 minutes; ultra-long-haul (A350-900ULR, B787-9): 90–120 minutes.
Turnaround and OTP
Turnaround efficiency is the primary airline-controllable variable in OTP. A turnaround that runs long propagates delay through the rest of the day's rotation for that aircraft. Airlines invest heavily in turnaround process engineering, particularly for the minimum connect time (MCT) calculation.
Ground Handling Coordination
The turnaround is coordinated by the ground handling agent, who sequences all service providers. In A-CDM environments, the turnaround progress is tracked in the AODB and feeds into the TOBT (Target Off-Block Time) calculation.
