STCR — Stretcher Case

STCR handling represents the most complex end of special passenger carriage. Accommodating a passenger on a stretcher requires significant pre-planning, structural modification of the cabin and coordination across medical, operations and commercial teams.

Cabin Configuration

A stretcher typically occupies 6–9 consecutive economy seats. The seats are removed or folded, and a rigid stretcher frame is installed on the seat tracks. Medical equipment — oxygen, monitoring devices — must be secured and powered. Most airlines require the stretcher passenger to be accompanied by a qualified medical attendant.

Medical Clearance

STCR carriage requires medical clearance from the airline's medical desk (usually provided by contracted aviation medical services). The attending physician must provide documentation of the patient's condition, fitness to fly and equipment requirements. MEDA (medical case) SSR is typically added alongside STCR.

Commercial Implications

The airline charges for the seats occupied by the stretcher (typically 6–9 seats at a group fare). Revenue loss from those seats, combined with the operational complexity, makes STCR handling expensive.

Regulatory Requirements

In-flight medical oxygen, defibrillators and the qualifications of any medical attendant must comply with the regulations of the countries of departure and arrival. EASA and FAA have specific requirements for in-flight medical equipment carriage.
