Definition
The Flight Management System (FMS) is an onboard avionics computer that integrates navigation, flight planning, and aircraft performance data so the crew can program and fly a route with optimized fuel use, speed, and altitude from takeoff to landing.
What the FMS Does
The Flight Management System is the central computer that flight crews use to plan, execute, and monitor a flight. It combines a navigation database, a performance model of the specific aircraft, and inputs from sensors such as GNSS and inertial reference systems to calculate the aircraft's position and the optimal way to fly the planned route.
Pilots interact with the FMS through a control display unit, often called a Multifunction Control and Display Unit (MCDU), where they enter the flight plan, departure and arrival procedures, and performance factors such as cost index, gross weight, and expected winds.

The FMS does not fly the aircraft by itself; it sends guidance commands to the autopilot and autothrottle, which move the controls. It draws position data from GNSS/GPS and inertial sensors, and it is frequently updated with route and weather information via ACARS data-link messages. Ground-based navigation aids such as VOR stations remain part of the position-fixing solution as backup or cross-check inputs, and instrument approach guidance such as ILS may be flown independently of, or in coordination with, FMS-computed paths.
Why It Matters
Before the FMS became standard equipment, pilots manually computed headings, fuel burn, and descent points using charts, tables, and hand calculations. The FMS reduces crew workload, improves the precision of navigation and vertical profiles, and supports fuel-efficient operations. Because the system depends on crew-entered data, incorrect route or performance entries are a recognized source of navigation errors, which is why cross-checking FMS inputs is a standard part of airline procedures.
Where It Is Found
FMS equipment, generally built to industry specifications such as ARINC 702A for Advanced Flight Management Computer Systems, is standard on modern airliners and many business jets, and equivalent flight-planning functions are increasingly integrated into general aviation avionics suites.
