Definition
A waypoint is a defined geographical position — identified by a five-letter name code (e.g. LOGAN, TULIP) or a VOR/DME fix — used to define flight routes, airways, departure and arrival procedures, and to report position to ATC.
What a Waypoint Is
A waypoint is simply a defined point in space used to build a flight route — a location an aircraft is meant to fly to, or through, on its way somewhere else. Unlike a VOR or other ground-based navigation aid, a waypoint doesn't need any physical infrastructure at all: it's a coordinate, given a name so pilots and controllers can refer to it in speech and in flight plans without reading out raw latitude/longitude every time.
The Five-Letter Naming Convention
Most enroute waypoints carry a distinctive five-letter, pronounceable name — real-world examples include names like LOGAN, TULIP, or HELEN — deliberately chosen to be easy to say clearly over the radio and easy to distinguish from any nearby waypoint, airport code, or callsign, which typically use a different number of characters. This naming convention is part of why waypoint names sometimes sound whimsical or playful: aviation authorities in many countries have latitude in choosing names, as long as they meet the readability and non-duplication requirements, and namers occasionally have some fun with it within a local area.
Waypoints vs VOR Fixes
Before satellite navigation, most usable "waypoints" were VOR stations themselves, or fixes defined by the intersection of radials from two VOR stations — meaning a route was constrained to wherever ground-based navigation aids happened to be. RNAV (Area Navigation) and modern satellite navigation removed that constraint: a waypoint today can be placed anywhere useful, independent of ground infrastructure, which is what allows modern airways and procedures to be drawn far more efficiently than the VOR-constrained routes of previous decades.
How Waypoints Build a Route
A full flight plan is essentially a chain of waypoints strung together — departure procedures (SIDs) and arrival procedures (STARs) are built from sequences of named waypoints and altitude/speed constraints at each one, and the enroute portion of a flight plan is likewise just a list of waypoints an aircraft's flight management system will fly to in order. ATC also uses waypoint names as shorthand when issuing clearances or describing traffic, since referring to "TULIP" is faster and less ambiguous than describing a raw coordinate over the radio.
RNAV Waypoints and Modern Navigation
Modern RNAV waypoints are typically defined with high positional precision and are the building blocks of Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) procedures, which allow more direct, fuel-efficient routings and tighter, more predictable approach paths than the older VOR-to-VOR airway system could support.
