Why "Black Box" Is a Misnomer

Despite the name, the flight recorders every commercial aircraft carries are painted bright, fluorescent orange, not black — specifically so they're easy to spot in wreckage. The "black box" nickname is a holdover from World War Two, when the British Royal Air Force used non-reflective black-painted boxes to house secret electronic navigation equipment, precisely so the housing itself wouldn't be noticed. That original meaning — deliberately inconspicuous — is essentially the opposite of what a modern flight recorder is designed for, which is exactly why the paint scheme was flipped to the most visually conspicuous colour available.

Two Separate Recorders

"Black box" actually refers to two distinct devices, both required on commercial aircraft. The Flight Data Recorder (FDR) captures a continuous stream of electronic flight parameters — altitude, airspeed, heading, control surface positions, engine performance and dozens of other data points — several times per second throughout the flight. The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) captures audio from the flight deck — crew conversations, radio communications, and ambient cockpit sounds — over a rolling window (historically 30 minutes, now commonly two hours or more on newer installations). Together, they reconstruct both *what the aircraft was doing* and *what the crew was saying and hearing* in the period leading up to an incident.

Built to Survive What Destroys Everything Else

Because a flight recorder's entire purpose is to survive precisely the kind of event that destroys the rest of the aircraft, ICAO mandates that both units be constructed from crash-hardened materials — commonly stainless steel or titanium housings around the actual memory module — engineered to withstand impact forces around 3,400 g and sustained temperatures up to roughly 2,000°F (1,100°C) for at least 30 minutes, along with deep-water pressure survival for units that may end up on the ocean floor.

Regulatory Requirement

ICAO mandates both FDR and CVR carriage internationally, and national regulators implement and often extend those requirements — the FAA has required flight recorders on large commercial aircraft in the US since 1967, one of the earliest such mandates anywhere. Recorder data is used almost exclusively for accident and incident investigation (and, increasingly, proactive flight-data-monitoring programmes that catch developing problems before they become accidents) rather than routine operational monitoring, which is part of why the devices are specifically hardened to survive the worst case rather than optimised for everyday data retrieval.
