Slovenian civil aviation grew around Ljubljana Airport, which began passenger service in the early 1960s, and Adria Airways, founded in 1961 as Adria Aviopromet. Adria became Slovenia's national flag carrier after independence in 1991 and joined Star Alliance in 2004, but collapsed into bankruptcy in September 2019 after 58 years of operation, leaving Slovenia without a flag carrier since.
The airline that would become Adria Airways was established, beginning operations with two DC-6B aircraft purchased from KLM.
