Aviation History
Romania has an unusually strong claim to early aviation pioneering: engineer Traian Vuia flew a self-propelled, self-designed monoplane near Paris in 1906, and Aurel Vlaicu built and flew a series of original Romanian-designed aircraft from 1910, both predating much of the rest of European aviation development. Commercial air transport began with the French-Romanian joint venture CFRNA in 1920 and the domestic carrier LARES in the 1930s, and the modern flag carrier TAROM took its current name in 1954 under communist state ownership, operating Soviet-designed aircraft and building the largest fleet in the Eastern Bloc after Aeroflot by the late 1970s. After the 1989 revolution, TAROM shifted to Western aircraft, endured years of heavy financial losses, joined the SkyTeam alliance in 2010, and remains majority state-owned, while low-cost entrants such as Blue Air and the arrival of Wizz Air and Ryanair have reshaped Romania's air travel market since the 2000s.

TAROM became a full SkyTeam member on 25 June 2010, integrating Romania's flag carrier into a major global airline alliance.
TAROM reported its first profitable year since 2007, ending a long stretch of losses under continued majority state ownership.

Baneasa 'Aurel Vlaicu' International Airport — Bucharest (1912): First flights in the Baneasa area date to 1909; it 'became an airport' in 1912, when the National Air League opened a flight school there. Converted into a dedicated business/general-aviation airport in 2012; was Romania's only international airport until Henri Coanda Airport opened in 1968. Named by Airport Technology among the world's 10 oldest airports still in operation. TAROM (1920): Wikipedia infobox: 'Founded: 1 January 1920 (as CFRNA)' — the Compagnie Franco-Roumaine de Navigation Aerienne, registered in Paris 13 April 1920, following a 26 April 1920 Romanian decree establishing the Directorate of Aviation and granting CFRNA exploitation rights. Lineage chain of reorganizations: CFRNA (1920) -> SNNA (1928, name change) -> LARES (9 July 1930) -> merged with SARTA (20 July 1937) -> TARS, a Romanian-Soviet joint company (1945, took over LARES's domestic services from 1 Feb 1946) -> renamed TAROM 18 September 1954 (Soviet share bought out over the following decade). Wikipedia itself flags the inconsistency between the 1920 founding date and the 1954 'commenced operations (as TAROM)' date without fully reconciling them, describing a successive chain of reorganizations rather than asserting strict unbroken legal continuity. Menzies Aviation (United Kingdom), 2012: Menzies Aviation entered the Romanian ground-handling market in 2012 by acquiring Kamino Cargo. A separate, older entity, Globe Ground România, has operated in Romania since 1992 and today has foreign shareholders (Balaclava, Netherlands, and Swissport International, Switzerland), but available sources could not confirm whether it was foreign-owned from its 1992 founding or became so later, so it was not used as the primary claim. Marked tentative since no source explicitly frames the Menzies/Kamino Cargo deal as the first foreign entrant.
