Qilou Old Street, with its distinctive arcade-style colonial architecture, is a good compact layover walk roughly 30–40 minutes from the airport.

Hainan Province runs two separate visa-free routes worth telling apart. First, its own unilateral policy lets passport holders from 59 mostly European, Oceanian, and American countries enter visa-free for up to 30 days — but only via direct international arrival into Haikou Meilan, Sanya Phoenix, or Qionghai Boao airport (or by cruise); you must stay within Hainan Province, and transiting through a mainland hub like Shanghai or Beijing first voids it. Second, Haikou Meilan is also a port on the mainland's separate 240-hour visa-free transit policy, for eligible-nationality travelers holding an onward ticket to a third country/region. Confirm which policy (if either) applies to your passport and itinerary before relying on it — both have been revised more than once.
