Cairo Metro does not yet reach the airport — the long-planned Line 3 extension (Phase 4C, Heliopolis to CAI) remains in the planning stage with no confirmed completion date, so budget for a taxi or bus into the city instead.

AOT/CTA shuttle buses depart the terminals roughly every 30 minutes for Downtown Cairo, Giza and the Pyramids area; public routes 356 (Tahrir) and 362 (Elmounib) are cheaper but slower and crowded with luggage.

White metered taxis wait outside Arrivals for the roughly 30-minute ride into central Cairo — insist on the meter or agree a price before departing, since unmarked cabs commonly try to negotiate above metered rates. Note that EGP taxi fares have risen sharply over the past few years with currency depreciation, so treat any fare you've seen quoted online as outdated and confirm current pricing on the ground.

Uber and Careem both operate at CAI with designated pickup points outside Arrivals; fares are shown upfront in the app and tend to run below negotiated taxi rates.

Hertz, Avis, Europcar and local operators have desks in Terminals 2 and 3; Cairo's traffic and informal driving conventions make a hired driver a more relaxing option than self-drive for first-time visitors.
