History

Varig, founded in 1927, was Brazil's first airline and long-time flag carrier, and a founding member of Star Alliance in 1997. Mounting debt forced it into bankruptcy proceedings in 2005, after which its assets were split into 'old' Varig (later renamed Flex, liquidated in 2010) and a 'new' Varig entity reorganized as VRG Linhas Aéreas.

Current Operations

VRG Linhas Aéreas no longer operates as a separate carrier: it was purchased by Gol Airlines in 2007 and fully integrated into Gol's operations, and the Varig brand together with the IATA code RG were formally retired on 19 October 2008.
