History
The airline was established on 17 November 1962 and began flying in 1963 as Líneas Aéreas Paraguayas (LAP), Paraguay's flag carrier. After a brief period as a subsidiary of Ecuador's SAETA in the mid-1990s, Brazil's TAM Linhas Aéreas group acquired an 80% stake through its Aerolíneas Paraguayas subsidiary in September 1996, and the carrier was reorganized as TAM – Transportes Aéreos del Mercosur ("TAM Mercosur" or "TAM Paraguaya"), later adopting its Brazilian parent's full corporate identity in March 2008. Following the 2012 merger of Chile's LAN and Brazil's TAM into LATAM Airlines Group, the carrier was renamed LATAM Airlines Paraguay.
Current Operations
Now operating as LATAM Airlines Paraguay, the carrier remains the country's flag airline, flying an all-Airbus A320-family fleet from its hub at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Asunción to regional destinations across South America. LATAM Airlines Group holds roughly 94.98% of the company's shares, with the Paraguayan government retaining about 5.02%; the wider LATAM Group left the oneworld alliance in May 2020 and remains outside any of the three major global alliances today.
