History

The airline began on 30 June 1998 as OceanAir Linhas Aéreas, an air-taxi operator ferrying oil-industry workers to offshore platforms in Brazil's Campos Basin, before launching scheduled passenger service in 2002 on routes linking São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Macaé, and Campos. Colombia's Synergy Group, which also owned Avianca, acquired OceanAir in 2004, and in 2010 the carrier was rebranded as "Avianca Brasil" for the traveling public while keeping OceanAir as its legal name. It joined Star Alliance on 22 July 2015 and by 2018 had grown into Brazil's fourth-largest domestic carrier with roughly 14% market share.

Current Operations

Avianca Brasil (OceanAir) no longer operates: it filed for bankruptcy protection in Brazil on 10 December 2018 under heavy debt, had its flight operations suspended by regulator ANAC in May 2019, exited Star Alliance on 1 September 2019, and had its bankruptcy formally decreed on 14 July 2020. Its airport slots and routes were subsequently redistributed among other Brazilian carriers, and no airline flies today under the OceanAir or Avianca Brasil name or the O6 code.
