History
Binter Canarias was founded on 18 February 1988 as an Iberia subsidiary set up to serve inter-island routes within the Canary Islands, beginning operations on 26 March 1989. It was privatized in stages from late 1999, with Hesperia Inversiones Aéreas acquiring full control in July 2002, after which it grew into the dominant carrier connecting all eight inhabited Canary Islands. Over the following two decades the airline expanded into short- and medium-haul international routes to mainland Spain, Portugal, and West Africa.
Current Operations
Binter Canarias operates a fleet built around the Embraer E195-E2, having been the aircraft's European launch customer with revenue service starting in December 2019, alongside earlier E-Jet variants and ATR turboprops used on thinner inter-island routes. It is headquartered at Gran Canaria Airport with a major base at Tenerife North, and remains the principal carrier linking all the Canary Islands to each other as well as to mainland Spain, Madeira, and parts of West Africa. The airline is privately owned by Spanish investors (led by the Ilsamar Tenerife group) and is not part of any global alliance, though it maintains codeshare agreements with Iberia, Azores Airlines and other partners.
