History

Air Lituanica was registered in May 2012 and launched commercial operations on 30 June 2013 with a leased Embraer 170, opening a Vilnius-Brussels route; it was named after Lituanica, the aircraft flown by Lithuanian aviators Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas on their 1933 transatlantic flight. It was wholly owned by Air Vilnius Group, a company ultimately controlled by the Vilnius City Municipality, and grew to serve a handful of European destinations from its Vilnius Airport base. The carrier struggled financially almost from the start, including a 2013 dispute with Estonian Air over aircraft-lease payments, and was never able to build a sustainable route network.

Current Operations

Air Lituanica no longer exists: it ceased all flight operations on 22 May 2015 after running out of funds and filed for bankruptcy on 8 June 2015. The airline was liquidated, and its former Vilnius Airport routes were picked up by other carriers; it has not been revived under its own brand or IATA code since.
