History
Izhavia was formed in 1992 from the Izhevsk division of Aeroflot, initially known as Izhevsk Air Enterprise, and grew into the principal airline of Udmurtia, serving domestic Russian routes and occasional international charters from its Izhevsk base. State-owned by the Udmurt Republic government, it operated a mixed fleet that in later years included Boeing 737-800s alongside older Yakovlev Yak-42 jets. Safety concerns mounted through 2024-2025, including unreported flap malfunctions on a Boeing 737, foreshadowing the regulatory crackdown that followed in 2026.
Current Operations
Izhavia's operations were suspended after Russia's civil aviation regulator, Rosaviatsiya, first restricted and then, on 28 July 2026, fully revoked its air operator's certificate, citing a non-functional safety management system, falsified crew and maintenance records, and a Yak-42 flown without completing required checks; the airline grounded all flights on 1 August 2026. Roughly 46,000 booked passengers were transferred to other Russian carriers including Aeroflot and S7 (Sibir), Izhavia has sued Rosaviatsiya over the cancellation, and regional authorities have discussed restructuring or selling the carrier at auction, but as of early September 2026 it remains grounded with no confirmed date for resuming flights.
