History
Iran Aseman Airlines was established on 30 June 1980 through the merger of several small Iranian carriers, including Air Taxi Company, Pars Air Services, Hoor Asseman Airlines and two helicopter operators, and grew into one of Iran's major domestic airlines operating jets and turboprops to regional and provincial destinations. It suffered a series of serious accidents over the decades, including a Fokker F28 crash in October 1994 and the loss of an ATR 72-200 in February 2018 that killed all 66 aboard, and in January 2019 it operated the last scheduled Boeing 727 passenger flight in the world. Decades of international sanctions on Iran's aviation sector, including a US block on Boeing deliveries and an EU airspace ban over safety oversight concerns, left the airline unable to renew its aging fleet.
Current Operations
Iran Aseman Airlines has been severely diminished by sanctions-driven fleet decay and financial distress: its active fleet shrank to only a handful of aging Fokker 100s by late 2025, and the airline suspended flying entirely for roughly 120 days before resuming limited operations with three aircraft in May 2026, amid reports of unpaid staff. It continues to operate a reduced domestic network from its Tehran hub, but its long-term viability remains in doubt. It is not part of any global alliance and remains barred from EU airspace.
