The carrier traces its roots to Milne Bay Air, founded in 1987 for charter work supporting Papua New Guinea's resource sector, and grew into a scheduled domestic operator as Airlines PNG after obtaining an RPT licence in 1992. It rebranded as PNG Air in November 2015 following a change of ownership.
