SmartLynx Airlines traced its origins to LatCharter, founded in the early 1990s in Latvia and rebranded SmartLynx in the mid-2000s, growing into one of Europe's largest ACMI/wet-lease and charter operators with branded subsidiaries in Estonia and Malta.

SmartLynx ceased all operations on November 24, 2025, roughly a month after new ownership took over from Avia Solutions Group and shortly after entering legal protection proceedings; at closure it operated a fleet of around 12 Airbus narrowbodies.
