History

Belair Airlines traced its lineage to Balair, a Swiss charter carrier founded in 1953, and was recreated in its modern form on 16 October 2001 by Swiss travel group Hotelplan/Migros after Swissair's 2001 collapse absorbed the original Balair brand. Air Berlin acquired a 49% stake in 2007 and took full ownership in October 2009, folding Belair into its European leisure network as a Zurich-based charter subsidiary flying holidaymakers to Mediterranean and other resort destinations.

Current Operations

Belair Airlines no longer operates. It ceased flying on 28 October 2017 when its parent, Air Berlin, filed for insolvency and wound down its subsidiaries, and reports that December indicated Belair lacked even the funds to cover outstanding staff salaries. Its former Zurich- and Basel-based charter routes were absorbed by other operators, and the Belair brand and air operator's certificate were never revived.
