Overview
Inmarsat, founded in 1979, was a pioneer of L-band and Ka-band satellite communications for aviation, maritime and government users, with its GX Aviation and SwiftBroadband services widely fitted on commercial and business aircraft. Viasat completed its acquisition of Inmarsat on May 31, 2023, and Inmarsat now operates as part of Viasat's aviation connectivity business rather than as an independent company, while continuing to run its Global Xpress satellite network and existing airline contracts under UK operation commitments. The status reflects an in-progress technical and commercial integration between the two former rivals' satcom networks.
