Aviation Museums › Air Force & Military Aviation
Occupying three hangars on the former RAF Ta' Kali airfield, this museum documents Malta's aviation history with particular emphasis on the Second World War (the Siege/Battle of Malta) and the postwar era. Beyond static display, the museum actively restores aircraft, including some brought back to airworthy condition, and has grown through donations and EU-funded expansion (a new Main Exhibition Hangar funded in 2021).
Notable Exhibits
- Hawker Hurricane IIa (Z3055) and Supermarine Spitfire IX (EN199) — WWII fighters linked directly to the Battle of Malta.
- Gloster Meteor F8 / NF14 — Early jet fighter variants on display.
- Reggiane Re.2001 Falco II (wreckage) — Noted by the museum as the only surviving example of its type in the world.
- Fairey Swordfish (fuselage skeleton) — Only the airframe skeleton survives.
- Hawker Sea Hawk FGA.6 (WV826) — Postwar jet fighter.
A dedicated WWII hangar, opened in 2005, displays airframes restored from Battle of Malta aircraft casualties.
The museum's Reggiane Re.2001 wreckage is reportedly the last known surviving example of that Italian WWII fighter type anywhere in the world.
