Zulu time is the aviation and military term for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). All aviation operations — flight plans, ATC communications, NOTAMs, METARs and schedules — use Zulu time to eliminate confusion from time zones and daylight saving changes across global operations.

What Zulu Time Actually Is

Zulu time is simply Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) referred to by its aviation and military radio name. The "Zulu" comes from the ICAO phonetic alphabet word for the letter Z — the same alphabet that gives "Juliet" for J and "Kilo" for K — because UTC times in aviation documentation and radio communication are conventionally suffixed with a "Z" (e.g., "1430Z"), and that Z is read aloud as "Zulu" rather than spelled out.

Why Aviation Standardized on One Time Zone

A flight can cross a dozen time zones between departure and arrival, and every ground station, ATC sector and airline operations center it interacts with along the way sits in a different local time. If flight plans, ATC clearances and weather reports were all issued in local time, coordinating a single flight across that many time zones would be a constant source of arithmetic errors — exactly the kind of ambiguity aviation safety systems are designed to eliminate. By fixing every operational document and communication to one single, unchanging time reference — UTC — regardless of where in the world the aircraft, controller or dispatcher happens to be, that entire category of error disappears. It also sidesteps daylight saving time entirely, since UTC never changes with the seasons even though most countries' local clocks do.

Where You Encounter Zulu Time

Zulu time appears throughout aviation documentation: flight plans specify departure and arrival times in Zulu, ATC clearances and radio communications reference times in Zulu, and the two most common weather products pilots use — METARs (routine surface weather observations) and TAFs (terminal forecasts) — are both issued and timestamped in Zulu, as are NOTAMs (Notices to Air Missions) describing hazards or changes at an airport or in airspace.

Converting Zulu to Local Time

Because Zulu time is identical to UTC, converting it to any local time is just standard time-zone arithmetic — add or subtract the local UTC offset, adjusting for daylight saving where the local zone observes it (UTC itself never does). Pilots and dispatchers do this routinely when comparing a Zulu-timed flight plan against a passenger-facing local departure/arrival time, but the operational side of the flight — everything ATC, dispatch and weather systems actually run on — stays in Zulu throughout.
