Definition

SWIM (System Wide Information Management) is the aviation data-sharing framework that enables standardised, interoperable exchange of operational information — flight data, weather, airspace, airport status — across all stakeholders in the aviation ecosystem using internet-based protocols.

SWIM — System Wide Information Management

SWIM is the information layer of the next-generation air traffic management system (NextGen in the US, SESAR in Europe). It replaces point-to-point data feeds with a publish-subscribe service bus where any authorised stakeholder can access the data they need.

The Problem SWIM Solves

Traditional aviation data sharing is characterised by bilateral, custom interfaces: the airport's AODB connects to the airline's OCC via one bespoke link, the airline's system connects to ATC via another, and so on. Each interface must be built and maintained separately. SWIM replaces this fragmented landscape with a common information exchange framework.

SWIM Architecture

SWIM defines: data service providers (airports, airlines, ATC, meteorological services, network managers) who publish data to the SWIM network; data service consumers who subscribe to the data they need; an interoperability framework based on open internet standards (XML, WSDL, SOAP, REST).

Information Types

SWIM carries: flight plan and trajectory data (FIXM — Flight Information Exchange Model), aerodrome and airspace data (AIXM — Aeronautical Information Exchange Model), meteorological data (WXXM — Weather Information Exchange Model), airport operational status (AIDX — Airport Information Data Exchange).

SESAR and NextGen

SWIM is a core component of both the EU's SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) programme and the FAA's NextGen modernisation initiative. It is the data infrastructure that enables 4D trajectory-based operations — the long-term goal of ATM modernisation.
