Definition

A squawk code is a four-digit code entered into an aircraft's transponder that identifies it to air traffic control radar, including three universally reserved emergency codes — 7500 (hijacking), 7600 (radio failure) and 7700 (general emergency).

What a Squawk Code Actually Does

A squawk code is a four-digit code a pilot enters into the aircraft's transponder, which the transponder then transmits automatically whenever it's interrogated by ground radar — letting air traffic control instantly correlate a specific radar return with a specific aircraft and its assigned callsign, rather than having to track blips purely by position and movement. ATC assigns a working squawk code to each aircraft under its control, and pilots read the assigned code back to confirm it's been set correctly (for example, "Squawk 4725").

The Default and the Emergencies

7000 is the default VFR code used in many countries when an aircraft is flying visually without being assigned a specific code by ATC — essentially the "nothing to report" baseline. Three other codes are reserved worldwide for the same three universally recognised emergency situations, chosen specifically so any controller anywhere instantly understands the situation the moment the code appears, without needing a word of radio communication: 7500 signals unlawful interference — a hijacking — and is deliberately something a pilot can enter silently, without alerting anyone in the cabin, precisely because verbally declaring a hijacking in progress could itself be dangerous. 7600 signals lost radio communication, telling ATC the aircraft can still be seen and is still flying its last-known clearance or an expected contingency procedure, but cannot hear or respond to instructions. 7700 is the general emergency code, covering anything from a medical emergency to an engine failure to a fuel problem — any situation serious enough that ATC needs to immediately prioritise that aircraft's handling.

Why Codes, Not Just Voice

The entire value of squawk codes lies in their standardisation and their independence from voice communication: a controller sees 7700 appear on a radar display and immediately knows to clear other traffic and offer priority handling, without waiting for — or in the case of 7600, being able to receive — a verbal explanation. That instant, universal recognisability is precisely why these specific codes are treated as sacrosanct across the entire international aviation system and never reassigned to routine use.
