Definition
RNP and RNAV are the two families of performance-based navigation specification under ICAO's PBN framework that let aircraft fly precise, repeatable paths defined by onboard systems rather than by flying directly to and from ground-based navaids.
Performance-Based Navigation (PBN)
Performance-Based Navigation is the ICAO framework that replaced designating routes and approaches around specific ground-based navigation aids, such as VOR, NDB, and DME, with navigation specifications defined by required accuracy, integrity, and functionality. Under PBN, an aircraft can fly a precise, repeatable path defined by waypoints in its flight management system rather than by flying directly to and from ground stations.
RNAV: Area Navigation
RNAV (Area Navigation) specifications let an aircraft navigate along a desired flight path within the coverage of ground- or satellite-based navigation aids, or within the limits of self-contained systems, without overflying each navaid in sequence. RNAV specifications, such as RNAV 1 or RNAV 5, define the required accuracy but do not require the aircraft to monitor and alert the crew if that accuracy is not being met.
RNP: Required Navigation Performance
RNP specifications add exactly that missing piece: an onboard requirement for the aircraft to monitor its own navigation performance and alert the crew if it cannot meet the required accuracy for the procedure being flown. This performance monitoring and alerting capability is the defining difference between an RNP specification and an RNAV specification.
Why the Distinction Matters
Because RNP aircraft self-monitor and alert on performance degradation, air traffic control can have greater confidence in where those aircraft actually are relative to their cleared path. That confidence allows tighter route spacing and curved or offset approach paths around terrain or noise-sensitive areas, and, with specifications like RNP AR APCH (Authorization Required), approach minima that can approach ILS-like performance at airports with difficult terrain or no ILS infrastructure at all.
Common Specifications
Both families reduce reliance on ground-based navaids for route and approach design, which is why PBN is now the default basis for new instrument procedures worldwide.
