Definition
A go-around is a routine, deliberate manoeuvre in which a crew discontinues an approach and climbs away instead of landing, triggered by anything from an unclear runway to an unstabilised approach — a planned, trained-for outcome rather than an emergency.
What a Go-Around Actually Is
A go-around — formally a missed approach when it happens as part of a published instrument procedure — is a deliberate, planned manoeuvre in which a crew discontinues an approach and climbs the aircraft away, rather than continuing to land. It is not an emergency and not a sign anything is broken; it's a routine, expected outcome that every approach is briefed for in advance, precisely because the decision to go around has to be made and executed within seconds if the conditions call for it.
Why Crews Go Around
A go-around can be triggered by any number of ordinary, non-alarming situations: the runway isn't clear when it needs to be (a preceding aircraft still on the runway, a vehicle crossing, a bird strike risk); the approach simply isn't stabilised by the point procedures require it to be (too fast, too high, not correctly configured); weather changes suddenly — a wind shear warning, a sudden crosswind gust, or visibility dropping below the approach's minima at the last moment; ATC issues a last-second instruction, such as a conflicting aircraft needing the runway; or, on an instrument approach, the crew simply doesn't acquire the required visual reference by the decision height or minimum descent altitude and therefore isn't legally permitted to continue.
What Happens During One
Executing a go-around means applying go-around power, establishing a climb, retracting the landing gear and flaps on the schedule the aircraft type requires, and following the published missed-approach procedure — a specific route and altitude sequence designed to keep the aircraft clear of terrain and other traffic while it climbs away and either re-sequences for another attempt or heads to a holding pattern or alternate airport. Because this all has to happen correctly and quickly, close to the ground, in a busy phase of flight, go-arounds are one of the manoeuvres airlines train and check most rigorously in the simulator — a pilot who has never actually flown a real go-around in the aircraft may still have practised dozens in training specifically because the manoeuvre needs to be close to automatic when actually required.
A Sign the System Is Working, Not Failing
Because a go-around exists specifically as the safe alternative to continuing an approach that isn't going to result in a safe landing, aviation safety culture treats a crew's decision to go around — for any reason, however minor it later turns out to be — as exactly the correct, conservative choice rather than something to second-guess after the fact. Passengers who experience one are, statistically, experiencing the system doing precisely what it's designed to do.
