Definition
A D Check is the most comprehensive and expensive scheduled aircraft maintenance event, performed every 6–12 years. The aircraft is essentially stripped to its airframe for complete structural inspection, taking 4–6 weeks and costing $4–6 million or more for a widebody aircraft.
D Check
The D Check — sometimes called a Heavy Maintenance Visit or structural overhaul — is the deepest inspection a commercial aircraft undergoes during its service life. It is so comprehensive that the aircraft leaves the hangar in a condition close to new in terms of structure and systems certification.
D Check Scope
A D Check involves: complete removal of the aircraft interior (seats, galleys, lavatories, ceiling and wall panels, floor panels, insulation blankets), access to every structural zone of the fuselage, wings, empennage and control surfaces, comprehensive corrosion inspection and treatment, non-destructive testing (NDT) of structural components, overhaul or replacement of major systems reaching life limits, structural repairs where required, complete repaint of the exterior, and potentially major modifications — avionics upgrades, CPDLC/ADS-B installation, WiFi retrofit, cabin reconfiguration.
D Check Interval
The D Check interval is typically 6–12 years, expressed in flight cycles or calendar time in the aircraft's maintenance programme. A high-utilisation aircraft on short-haul routes accumulates cycles faster and may reach its D Check threshold sooner in calendar years than a long-haul operator flying the same type.
Economic Decision Point
The D Check is often an economic inflection point for aircraft retirement decisions. When D Check cost approaches or exceeds the residual market value of the aircraft, operators may choose to retire the airframe rather than invest in the overhaul. This is particularly true for older, less fuel-efficient types.
Modern Aircraft Trends
Next-generation aircraft (A350, B787) use composite structures that resist corrosion and fatigue differently from aluminium, potentially extending the interval and reducing the scope of D Check equivalent events. Boeing markets the B787's major maintenance as a '12-year check' rather than a traditional D Check.
