What is turnaround?

Turnaround is the full set of activities between an aircraft arriving at its gate or stand and being ready to depart again. Airlines plan a specific turnaround time for each aircraft type and route — often 25–45 minutes for short-haul, several hours for long-haul widebodies with deeper servicing needs. Every minute of turnaround time is scheduled, because a late departure on one flight can cascade into delays on every flight that aircraft flies for the rest of the day.

Why turnaround time matters commercially

An aircraft only earns revenue while it's flying — parked at a gate, it's costing the airline money in ownership or lease costs without generating any. Airlines design their schedules to minimize time on the ground without cutting corners on safety or service, because faster, well-managed turnarounds mean more flights, and more revenue, from the same aircraft over a day. This is one reason short-haul, low-cost operations tend to push turnaround times aggressively low, while long-haul widebody aircraft, which fly far fewer sectors per day anyway, can afford a longer and more thorough stop.

What happens on the ramp

Several tasks happen simultaneously once the aircraft is parked ("on stand" or "on chocks"): baggage and cargo are unloaded and then reloaded, the cabin is cleaned, catering is restocked, the aircraft is refueled, and lavatory and potable water services are serviced. Ground crews use specialized ground support equipment (GSE) — pushback tugs, baggage tractors and belt loaders, catering trucks, fuel bowsers, and de-icing vehicles in cold weather — to do this quickly and safely around a live aircraft. Baggage handlers also perform a reconciliation check, confirming that only bags belonging to passengers who actually boarded make it onto the aircraft — a security safeguard as much as a logistics one. Because so many of these tasks happen close together and close to the aircraft at once, ground handling relies heavily on standardized hand signals, headset communication, and marked safety zones on the apron to prevent vehicles and equipment from colliding with each other or the aircraft itself; crews also stay alert to foreign object debris (FOD) — loose items on the ramp surface that could be ingested by an engine or damage a tire.

Weight and balance: the load sheet

Before an aircraft can depart, someone has to confirm it isn't just within its maximum takeoff weight, but that the weight is distributed correctly. This is calculated on a load sheet, which combines the aircraft's own weight with the weight and position of passengers, baggage, cargo, and fuel to work out the aircraft's center of gravity. An aircraft loaded too far forward or too far aft can be genuinely difficult or unsafe to control, particularly during takeoff and landing, so load control staff coordinate closely with baggage and cargo teams during turnaround to make sure the final loading matches the numbers the load sheet assumes. The finished load sheet is one of the documents the captain must review and accept before the flight can leave the gate.

Who does the work

Much of this is performed by ground handling companies, which may be independent firms, airport-owned operations, or a division of an airline itself, working under contract to the airlines operating at that airport. Ground handlers coordinate closely with the flight crew, the airline's operations team, and air traffic control to keep the turnaround on schedule.

De-icing

In cold or icy conditions, aircraft may need de-icing — spraying a heated fluid to remove ice and snow that has already formed. This is typically followed, in ongoing snow or freezing conditions, by a thicker anti-icing fluid designed to prevent ice from reforming on the wings and other critical surfaces before takeoff. These fluids are graded by type, from thin fluids used for straightforward de-icing to thicker, longer-lasting fluids used when snow keeps falling; each type has a holdover time, an estimated window after which the protection can no longer be trusted and the aircraft may need treating again before departure. De-icing adds time to the turnaround and is one of the most common causes of winter delays, since ice on wings and control surfaces is a serious safety hazard.

When turnarounds go wrong

Turnarounds are planned tightly, so there's little slack when something doesn't go to plan. A late-arriving inbound aircraft, a mechanical issue found during the pre-flight inspection, a missing crew member, or a queue for de-icing can all eat into the scheduled time and push the departure back. Airlines and airports build some buffer and recovery options into the schedule — spare aircraft, standby crews, or swapping a late aircraft's flight number onto a different tail — but at busy times a single delayed turnaround can ripple through the rest of that aircraft's day, and sometimes into other aircraft and crews connected to it. A short delay on one rotation is usually absorbed by schedule buffer built in earlier in the day; a longer one can force an airline to swap the affected flight onto a different, available aircraft to protect the rest of the schedule, even if that means the original aircraft catches up empty or later in the day.
