Landside vs. airside
Every airport is split into two zones. Landside is everything accessible without going through security — check-in halls, curbside drop-off, parking, landside shops and restaurants. Airside is everything beyond the security checkpoint — gates, the tarmac, runways, and taxiways. This split exists purely for security and safety: only screened passengers, staff and vehicles with the right clearance are allowed airside.

Terminal shapes
Terminals are typically built around one of a few basic layouts: linear (gates in a row along a single concourse), pier or finger (concourses extending out from a central hub, common at large hubs), and satellite (a separate building connected by tunnel or train, often used to add gate capacity without extending the main terminal). A single major airport might combine a pier concourse built decades ago with a newer satellite terminal added once the original building ran out of gates, connected by an automated people-mover train — one reason connecting between terminals at a big hub can mean a long walk, a train ride, or even a bus trip between airside areas. The choice affects how far passengers walk and how efficiently aircraft can be parked and serviced.
Airport codes: IATA and ICAO
Every airport carries two different identifying codes, and they serve different audiences. The IATA code is the familiar three-letter code printed on boarding passes and luggage tags — the kind travelers recognize on signage and departure boards. The ICAO code is a four-letter code used mainly by pilots, air traffic control, and flight planning systems; it often starts with a letter tied to the country or region, followed by three more letters identifying the specific airport. The two codes don't always look related to each other, and an airport can even change its IATA code over time — usually to resolve a naming conflict — while the ICAO code tends to stay far more stable.

The airfield: runways, taxiways, apron
The runway is where aircraft take off and land — its length and surface strength determine which aircraft types can use it. Runways are named after their magnetic compass heading, rounded to the nearest ten degrees with the final zero dropped: a runway aligned roughly northeast, at about 090 degrees, is called runway 09, and an aircraft approaching from the opposite direction on the very same strip of pavement uses the number for the reverse heading, roughly 270 degrees, so it becomes runway 27. Taxiways connect runways to the terminal area, letting aircraft move without occupying the runway itself. The apron (also called the ramp) is the paved area around the terminal where aircraft park at gates or remote stands for boarding, fueling, and servicing.
Who's watching the airfield
The control tower manages everything moving on the ground and in the immediate airspace around the airport — clearances for taxi, takeoff, and landing. Once an aircraft climbs a bit further out, responsibility passes to approach or departure control, and then to en-route centers, each covering a slice of airspace before handing the flight to the next. This tower-and-controller structure is distinct from the airlines and ground handlers who manage what happens at the aircraft once it's parked (see the Ground Operations chapter).
Not just passenger jets
Not every part of an airport serves scheduled passenger flights. Many airports have a separate general aviation area for private and business aircraft, often with its own ramp and a fixed-base operator (FBO) handling fueling and services. Larger airports frequently have dedicated cargo aprons and warehouse facilities for freighter aircraft, which operate on their own schedules built around trucking connections and delivery deadlines rather than passenger convenience. Some airports handle passengers and cargo side by side; a few operate almost entirely as cargo hubs, moving little or no scheduled passenger traffic at all. Some airports also share their runways with military operations, flight training schools, or aircraft maintenance and storage facilities, none of which ever show up on a passenger departure board.
Airport ownership
Airports are owned and run under a range of models around the world. Many are owned by national, regional, or city governments and operated directly by a public agency. Others are structured as corporations with government and private shareholders, or leased long-term to a private operator under a concession agreement, with the airport authority retaining ownership of the land and infrastructure. A few are fully privately owned. The ownership model shapes decisions like how landing fees are set, how expansion projects get funded, and how much say airlines have in shaping the terminal they fly from.
Hub airports vs. point-to-point
Some airports function as hubs — a home base where one or more airlines connect large numbers of passengers between many different routes, often via a wave of arrivals followed by a wave of departures (a "bank"). Others operate mostly point-to-point, where flights go directly between two cities without funneling passengers through a connection. Low-cost carriers tend to favor point-to-point networks; full-service network carriers often build their schedules around a hub.
Slots and capacity
At the busiest airports, there simply isn't room for every airline to fly whenever it wants — runway and gate capacity is finite. Slots are scheduled permissions to take off or land at a specific time, allocated and coordinated (often twice a year) so that traffic doesn't exceed what the airport and airspace can safely handle.
