Guinea's national airline history began soon after independence from France in 1958, when the country's close alignment with the Soviet bloc shaped its early state carrier, Air Guinée, which operated Soviet-built aircraft. Air Guinée and its successors struggled financially and ceased operations at various points, leaving Guinea for years without a stable national airline before a state-backed relaunch in the 2020s.
Guinea gained independence from France and, aligning with the Soviet bloc, began building state civil aviation capacity distinct from the former French colonial system.
Air Guinée was founded as the state flag carrier, operating Soviet-supplied aircraft reflecting Guinea's Cold War-era ties with the USSR.
Financial difficulties led to the collapse of the original Air Guinée, leaving Guinea without a functioning national carrier for several years.
A successor carrier, Air Guinée Express, was launched to restore national air service, though it too later ceased regular operations amid financial strain.
