Gabon's flag-carrier history runs from Compagnie Aérienne Gabonaise (1951) through Air Gabon, reconstituted as the national carrier in 1977 after Gabon left the multinational Air Afrique consortium, to Air Gabon's 2006 bankruptcy and shutdown. After nearly two decades without a true national airline, Gabon's government relaunched a flag carrier in 2024 — Fly Gabon — built around the existing private carrier Afrijet.
Gabon's earliest domestic airline began regional flights from Libreville.
Reconstituted in May 1977 after Gabon's withdrawal from the Air Afrique consortium, Air Gabon became the country's national airline, majority government-owned.
Air Gabon introduced a Boeing 747 for long-haul international routes, reflecting its ambitions as a regional flag carrier.
The private carrier Afrijet began operations, later becoming Gabon's leading business and regional aviation operator.
Air Gabon ceased operations in March 2006 following bankruptcy; a planned successor joint venture with Royal Air Maroc never materialized.
Following a 2023 change of government, Gabon's state acquired a 56% stake in Afrijet and relaunched it as Fly Gabon, the country's new national carrier, beginning service in August 2024.
