Burkina Faso's flag carrier began as Air Volta in 1967 under what was then Upper Volta, and was renamed Air Burkina in 1984 after the country itself was renamed. The airline has cycled between state ownership, privatization to an Aga Khan-linked consortium (2001-2017), and renationalization, most recently completed in 2026, reflecting the recurring financial fragility common to the region's national carriers. Thomas Sankara International Airport in Ouagadougou, built in the 1960s, remains the country's principal air hub while a new airport at Donsin is under construction.
Established on 17 March 1967 as the flag carrier of Upper Volta, jointly owned by the government, Air France and private investors.
Following the country's renaming from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, the airline adopted the name Air Burkina.
Accumulated debt reached roughly one billion CFA francs, prompting government restructuring efforts.
The government privatized Air Burkina on 21 February 2001, transferring 56% ownership to the AKFED/IPS consortium of the Aga Khan Development Network.
The Burkinabé government resumed control of the airline in May 2017 after 16 years of private ownership.
Under the Traoré administration, the government fully nationalized Air Burkina, unwinding a 2020 transfer agreement with African Global Development.

Ground handling is split between RACGAE (a Burkinabè state-run régie, certified by ANAC) for all airlines, and Air Burkina's own in-house handling for itself — both domestic/self-handling, excluded by the rules. No foreign ground handler was found.
