Best use of a long layover

Once through immigration, a taxi or the Loca app gets you to Pha That Luang, Laos's national symbol, or the Mekong riverside promenade in about 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.

Inside the airport

Facilities are modest — the Air Lounge is the only real sit-down option if you have a pass or are willing to pay at the door; otherwise there's a café and a buffet-style restaurant on the 3rd floor.

ST Hotel Wattay Airport (about 0.3 miles) and Ali Grand Hotel (about 0.4 miles) are the closest options, though no confirmed hotel shuttle was found for either — arrange your own taxi or minivan.

A 30-day visa on arrival is available to US, UK and many other nationalities at Wattay: you'll need a passport valid 6+ months with a blank page, two passport photos (or pay a small fee to have one scanned), and a fee of roughly USD 30–50 payable in USD, THB, EUR or LAK — budget extra time at immigration for this before you even reach transport.
Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Laos before travel.

Practical Tips for Your VTE Layover

Use left-luggage storage at Wattay International Airport if you plan to leave the terminal — most airports offer coin lockers or staffed storage near arrivals.
Get a Laos eSIM before your layover so you have data for maps and translation the moment you land.
Download offline maps for Vientiane in advance — useful if you leave the terminal and connectivity is patchy.
Always allow at least 3 hours buffer before your next departure when leaving the airport — immigration queues are unpredictable.
Check your next airline's check-in deadline. Some require you to be at the gate 45–60 minutes before departure.
