Getting Around

City buses 35 and 635 run from the airport to central Tunis for well under a dinar, but are slow and often crowded — a budget option rather than a comfortable one. There is no TGM light rail or metro connection to the airport; a future metro extension has been discussed but does not exist yet.

Metered yellow taxis are genuinely inexpensive by Mediterranean standards — commonly cited around 10–20 TND to central Tunis by day, with roughly a 50% night surcharge after about 9pm plus small per-bag fees. Insist on the meter ("le compteur, s'il vous plaît") — some drivers try to quote inflated flat rates to tourists at the airport specifically; if a driver won't use the meter, take the next taxi in the rank.

Bolt and Yassir both operate in Tunis and are commonly used, including for airport pickups. Important caveat: Bolt's legal status in Tunisia is ambiguous — Tunisia's Ministry of Transportation considers app fares that undercut state-set meter rates to be technically unlawful, while Bolt argues it falls under different regulatory oversight; enforcement against riders/drivers is inconsistent. Uber does NOT operate in Tunisia.

Hertz, Avis, Europcar and local Tunisian firms all have desks in the arrivals hall; many visitors are advised to wait a day or two before picking up a rental given central Tunis traffic and parking.
