Best use of a long layover

Cathedral of Santa Isabel — about a 45-minute visit, best photographed from Plaza de la Independencia across the street.

Inside the airport

A local duty-free shop, snack bar/café, and currency exchange desk; card machines may be unreliable, so carry CFA francs. Expect a manual baggage search and a visible military presence.

Bisila Palace hotel is reported about 1km from the airport, and Magno Suites about 4.5km — both reportedly offer shuttle service.

Most nationalities require an advance e-Visa (mandatory since July 2023, about $75, 24-72hr approval, must arrive at Malabo specifically); visa-on-arrival is explicitly not available for any purpose including transit.
Transit visa requirements vary by nationality and change frequently. Always verify with the official embassy or consulate of Equatorial Guinea before travel.

Practical Tips for Your SSG Layover

Use left-luggage storage at Malabo International Airport if you plan to leave the terminal — most airports offer coin lockers or staffed storage near arrivals.
Get a Equatorial Guinea eSIM before your layover so you have data for maps and translation the moment you land.
Download offline maps for Malabo in advance — useful if you leave the terminal and connectivity is patchy.
Always allow at least 3 hours buffer before your next departure when leaving the airport — immigration queues are unpredictable.
Check your next airline's check-in deadline. Some require you to be at the gate 45–60 minutes before departure.
