Best use of a long layover

Tan Son Nhat is unusually close to downtown — about 7 km from District 1 — so Ben Thanh Market, the Reunification Palace, and the Notre-Dame Cathedral/Central Post Office area are realistically reachable even on a modest layover, traffic permitting.

Inside the airport

The international terminal is dated and can feel congested at peak hours; a new domestic terminal (T3) opened in 2025 to ease some of that pressure, though it doesn't directly affect international arrivals.

There's no airside sleep hotel at Tan Son Nhat; a handful of landside options (an ibis-branded property among them) sit a short drive away, but given how close the airport is to District 1, many travelers with a longer layover just head into the city itself.

Vietnam's visa-exemption list expanded through 2025 — most Western European passports now get 30 days visa-free — but plenty of nationalities still need an e-visa arranged online in advance (about $25–50); sterile international-to-international transit under 24 hours needs no visa at all if you're not leaving the terminal.
